In autumn 2014 a pupated fly maggot is placed inside a small hole in one of David Chipperfield’s temporary tree pillars at the Neue Nationalgalerie. Once the fly hatches from its cocoon it can move freely as flying sculpture through the museum without any limitation from the museum or its staff. It is invited to interact with other artworks. Dr. Joachim Jäger, Director of the Neue Nationalgalerie, is bound by contract to respect the fly as a living artwork, and provide for its well-being.
