The Last Exponent (Karl)

Altered Morphologies

Series of Single Portraits of Mass Produced Chicken

DNA analysis, div. broilers, X-ray, histology section, digital photograph

This photographic series is an investigation into new ways of interpreting animal identity within the classical genre of portraiture. It deals with one of the most common agricultural “products” – the chicken. Raised in industrial-scale livestock farming, its breeding is fuelled by human eating habits. One of the broilers that were portrayed, Heinrich, was given a second life in a petting zoo for children in Berlin. The others were bought as meat in different supermarkets. Their identity was examined using scientific visualisation techniques.
